John F. Crowley
President and Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Crowley became president and CEO of Amicus in January 2005, having served as a director since 2004. Previously he was founding president and CEO of Orexigen Therapeutics. Preceding Orexigen, Mr. Crowley was senior vice president at Genzyme Therapeutics, a position he assumed after overseeing the sale of Novazyme Pharmaceuticals to Genzyme in September 2001. Mr. Crowley was the founding president and CEO of Novazyme that was developing a novel treatment for Pompe disease. He previously served in several senior management roles with the Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (BMS), including director of the Executive Committee for the U.S. Medicines Group, director of Business Strategy for the U.S. Pharmaceuticals Group, and director of U.S. Area Marketing for the Neuroscience and Infectious Disease Division. Preceding his experience at BMS, Mr. Crowley worked as a business strategy consultant for Marakon Associates. Mr. Crowley began his professional career as a litigation associate in the Health Care Practice Group of the Indianapolis-based law firm of Bingham, Summers, Welsh & Spilman.
Mr. Crowley is involved with several charitable and community organizations, including serving on the Board of Directors of St. Peter's University Health Care System. Mr. Crowley's involvement with biotechnology stems from the 1998 diagnosis of two of his children with Pompe disease - a fatal neuromuscular disorder. Mr. Crowley and his family have been featured on the cover of The Wall Street Journal and on The Today Show, CNBC and The Paula Zahn Show on CNN. In 2006, Geeta Anand, Pulitzer prize winning writer for The Wall Street Journal, authored a book on Mr. Crowley entitled "The Cure: How a Father Raised $100 Million- and Bucked the Medical Establishment- in a Quest to Save His Children." Mr. Crowley is a commissioned officer in the United States Navy Reserve (active).
Mr. Crowley earned his B.S. degree in Foreign Service from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, his J.D. from the University of Notre Dame Law School and his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School..
Donald J. Hayden, Jr.
Chairman
From 1981-2006, Mr. Hayden had a highly-successful 25 year career in pharmaceuticals and related health care businesses with Bristol-Myers Squibb Company. Since March of 2006, Mr. Hayden has held key leadership roles at several venture-stage pharmaceutical and biotech companies.
At Bristol-Myers Squibb, Mr. Hayden served as executive vice president and president, Americas, overseeing two major pharmaceutical units and two healthcare businesses with combined annual sales in excess of $10 billion as well as global pharmaceutical manufacturing. Prior to that, Mr. Hayden held a number of senior management positions including vice president and general manager of Mead Johnson Laboratories; president of Oncology and Immunology; senior vice president for Worldwide Franchise Management and Business Development; president of Intercontinental and senior vice president, Business Development, Pharmaceuticals; president of Worldwide Medicines; executive vice president of Strategy; and executive vice president of the Health Care Group.
Since leaving Bristol-Myers Squibb in early 2006, Mr. Hayden has served as Chairman of Amicus Therapeutics, Transave Inhalation Biotherapeutics, Vitae Pharmaceuticals and Gloucester Pharmaceuticals as well as serving as a Director of Cogentus Pharmaceuticals.
Mr. Hayden received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and has an M.B.A. from Indiana University.
Alexander Barkas, Ph.D.
Managing Director, Prospect Venture Partners
Dr. Barkas joined our board of directors in 2004. Dr. Barkas is a Managing Director of Prospect Venture Partners, a venture capital firm. Prior to co-founding Prospect Venture Partners I, II and III, he was a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers from 1991 to 1997, where he focused on healthcare product company investments. Prior to Kleiner Perkins, Dr. Barkas was a founder and CEO of BioBridge Associates, a health care industry consulting firm. Dr. Barkas is currently Chairman of the Board of Geron Corporation and Tercica, Inc., and serves on the board of directors of Amicus Therapeutics, Inc. and several private life science companies. Dr. Barkas received a Ph.D. in biology from New York University and a B.A. in Biology from Brandeis University, where he currently is Chairman of the University Science Advisory Council and serves on the Board of Trustees.
Stephen Bloch, M.D.
Canaan Equity Partners
Dr. Bloch has served as a member of the board of directors since 2004. He joined Canaan Partners in June, 2002. Prior to joining Canaan, he founded Radiology Management Sciences, a risk manager of diagnostic imaging services for health plans and provider networks. He also served as the medical director for Omnisonics Medical Technologies, an emerging, medical device company focused on minimally invasive, ultrasonic surgical devices for cardiovascular applications. Additionally, he co-founded TeleRad, a teleradiology services company, and was an initial investor in OpenAir.com, an enterprise software company for professional services firms. He was previously a strategic consultant focusing on pharmaceuticals and medical devices with Arthur D. Little and was a practicing radiologist.
Dr. Bloch received his medical training as a radiologist at The Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School and in internal medicine at The Lenox Hill Hospital/ Cornell Medical School. He received his medical degree from the University of Rochester. He also received a MA in history of science and public policy from Harvard University and an AB degree in history from Dartmouth College.
He is currently on the board of Viacor and a board observer at CombinatoRx, Immunicon, and Genaissance Pharmaceuticals (GNSC).
P. Sherrill Neff
Quaker BioVentures
Mr. Neff has served as a member of the board of directors since 2005. He is a founding partner of Quaker BioVentures, a $280 million Mid-Atlantic life sciences venture capital firm. Mr. Neff is well regarded in the biopharmaceutical industry, is a previous Chairman of the Greater Philadelphia Venture Group, and previous President of the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Association. He sits on the following boards of directors: Amicus Therapeutics, BioRexis Pharmaceuticals, Biolex, Medmark, Regado Biosciences, Resource Capital Corporation, Greater Philadelphia Venture Group, University City Science Center, the Biotechnology Institute, and the Policy Board of WXPN at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also serving as Chairman of the Venture Capital Committee for the Biotechnology Industry Organization’s 2005 Annual Meeting in Philadelphia.
Prior to forming Quaker BioVentures, he was President, Chief Operating Officer, and a Director of Neose Technologies, Inc., a publicly traded life sciences company (NASDAQ: NTEC). Previously, Mr. Neff was Senior Vice President, Corporate Development at U.S. Healthcare, Inc., a leading publicly traded health maintenance organization. Mr. Neff was formerly a Managing Director in the investment banking division of Alex. Brown & Sons, and formerly an attorney at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius.
Mr. Neff is a graduate of Wesleyan University and the University of Michigan Law School.
Michael G. Raab
New Enterprise Associates
Mr. Raab has served as a member of the board of directors since 2004. Mr. Raab joined New Enterprise Associates in June 2002, where he has specialized in healthcare investments focusing on the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors. Prior to joining NEA he was most recently SVP, Therapeutics & General Manager, Ranagel, at Genzyme Corporation where he turned Renagel into a $1 billion opportunity. Previous to that he was VP of Business Development for Therapeutics Division of Genzyme, responsible for the identification and in-licensing of new therapeutic product opportunities. He gained extensive international experience while building a commercial operation in Latin America for the Therapeutics and Surgical Products groups at Genzyme. He was also Product Manager for Ceredase and was instrumental in the worldwide launch of Cerezyme, Genzyme’s $600 million therapy for Gaucher disease. Mr. Raab also spent a period within Genzyme’s Diagnostics Products & Services Division. Prior to Genzyme, he held sales and marketing positions at Repligen and at Bristol-Myers. He received a B.A. from DePauw University.
Mr. Raab serves on the boards of BioMedicines, CellGate and Novacea.
Glenn Sblendorio
The Medicines Company
Mr. Sblendorio joins the Amicus Board of Directors as the financial expert and will act as Chair of the audit committee. He currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President for The Medicines Company. Prior to joining The Medicines Company, Mr. Sblendorio was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Eyetech Pharmaceuticals, Inc. until it was acquired by OSI Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in November 2005. From July 2000 to February 2002, Mr. Sblendorio served as Senior Vice President of Business Development for The Medicines Company. From 1998 to July 2000, Mr. Sblendorio was the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of MPM Capital Advisors, LLC, an investment bank specializing in healthcare related transactions. Mr. Sblendorio’s pharmaceutical experience also includes 12 years at Hoffmann-LaRoche, Inc., a pharmaceutical company, in a variety of senior financial positions, including Chief Financial Officer of Roche Molecular Systems and Head of Finance-Controller for Amgen/Roche Europe. Mr. Sblendorio is also Chairman of NuLens Ltd., a medical device company that develops and manufactures intra-ocular lenses.
James N. Topper, M.D., Ph.D.
Frazier Healthcare
Dr. Topper has served as a member of the board of directors since 2004. He joined Frazier Healthcare in August 2003. He previously served as head of the cardiovascular research and development franchise at Millennium Pharmaceuticals and ran Millennium San Francisco (formerly COR Therapeutics). Prior to the merger of COR and Millennium, Dr. Topper served as the VP of Biology at COR, and was responsible for managing all of its research activities. He has served on the faculties of Stanford Medical School and Harvard Medical School prior to joining COR, where he functioned as a clinician, instructor and basic investigator.
Dr. Topper received his M.D. and Ph.D. (in Biophysics) from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1991 under the auspices of the Medical Scientist Training Program. He completed his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and is board certified in both disciplines. After completing a research fellowship in the Vascular Research Division in the department of Pathology at the Brigham and Women's hospital, he joined the faculty of Harvard Medical School from 1997-1998, and subsequently Stanford University as an Assistant Professor of Medicine (Cardiovascular) in July 1998. He has authored over 50 publications, and was the recipient of a Howard Hughes Scholars Award while on the faculty at Stanford University. He continues to hold an appointment as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Stanford University and as a Cardiology Consultant to the Palo Alto Veterans Administration Hospital.
Dr. Topper currently serves as an observer on the boards of CoTherix, Inc., and Portola Pharmaceuticals.
Gregory M. Weinhoff, M.D.
Partner, Collinson Howe & Lennox
Dr. Weinhoff has served as a member of the board of directors since the company’s inception in 2002. He joined CHL Medical Partners in 2001. At CHL Medical Partners, he has been the founding CEO of Amicus Therapeutics, Inc. where he played a key role in identifying and licensing the platform technology and developing the company’s strategic plan. Dr. Weinhoff also played a key role in the early development and financing of VaxInnate Corporation, Resolvyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and Fidelis SeniorCare, Inc.
Prior to CHL Medical Partners, Dr. Weinhoff was a Senior Associate at Whitney & Co. where he concentrated on private equity investments in healthcare technology and services companies. Prior to his graduate training, Dr. Weinhoff was a financial analyst in the Healthcare Corporate Finance Group at Morgan Stanley & Co. where he worked on financings and merger and acquisition assignments for a number of biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and healthcare services clients.
Dr. Weinhoff is a graduate of Harvard College, Harvard Medical School and Harvard Business School, where he was a Baker Scholar.
He currently serves as a director of Fidelis SeniorCare, Inc., Resolvyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and VaxInnate Corporation.
